A broken rep — one where form slips — might move the same weight, but it’s distributing the load to the wrong structures. A deadlift with a rounded lower back puts compression on your discs instead of strengthening your posterior chain. Over time, these compensations add up. You plateau because the muscle you meant to train isn’t actually being worked. Or you get hurt.

Questions to Ask Before You Commit to a Weight or Rep Range

Can I complete the movement with a neutral spine and controlled pace?

If you’re already arching your back or swinging to generate momentum at rep 3 of your set, the weight is too heavy. Lower it. If you’re moving fast enough that you can’t feel your muscles working, slow down. Controlled tempo under load is what builds strength — speed only teaches your nervous system to cheat.

Am I moving through a full range of motion?

Partial reps feel good because they’re easier, but they don’t build full strength. A quarter squat looks like lifting more weight, but you’re only training the top quarter of the movement. A bench press that doesn’t touch your chest isn’t a bench press. Full range of motion is the definition of the exercise.

Is my body compensating to move this weight?

Are your shoulders hiking? Your knees caving? Your grip shifting? That’s compensation. It means the target muscle isn’t strong enough yet. That’s information — drop the weight 10-15 percent, rebuild with perfect form for a few weeks, then progress again.

What to Consider First When Starting Out

Start with the movement, not the weight

Bodyweight or an empty bar teaches you the pattern. Once the pattern is grooved, adding load makes sense. Rushing this phase costs months later.

Video yourself, or ask someone who lifts

You can’t feel form accurately. You need an outside view. A coach, a training partner, or even a phone propped up on your gym bag works. Watch for compensation.
